Acupuncture originated in ancient China and has been used for centuries to treat a variety of ailments, including joint pain, back pain, migraines, stiff muscles, stress, and more. The practice involves the insertion of specially designed, hair-thin needles just below the skin at specific points on the body. The points are referred to as “meridians.”

WHAT ARE MERIDIANS?

In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), acupuncture was used to restore balance to the body’s Qi, or life energy. Meridians are the pathways through which this Qi flows. They connect various organs and systems, facilitating the flow of vital energy necessary for maintaining balance and health. Each meridian is linked to specific acupuncture points, and stimulation of these points is believed to affect the associated organ and its functions.

The body has twelve primary meridians, each existing on both sides of the body. These meridians are categorized as either Yin or Yang, based on their energy characteristics. Each meridian is connected to an internal organ and helps to keep that organ functioning harmoniously.

THE YIN MERIDIANS

There are six Yin meridians. Yin meridians are associated with the body’s internal organs and focus on nurturing and storing energy:

  1. Lung Meridian (LU): Governs the respiratory system and immune function.
  2. Spleen Meridian (SP): Influences digestion, nutrient absorption, and blood production.
  3. Heart Meridian (HT): Regulates blood circulation and emotional health.
  4. Kidney Meridian (KD): Manages reproductive health, growth, and energy reserves.
  5. Pericardium Meridian (PC): Protects the heart and regulates emotional balance.
  6. Liver Meridian (LV): Controls the smooth flow of Qi and detoxification processes.

THE YANG MERIDIANS

The Yang meridians are associated with activity and outward movement of energy:

  1. Large Intestine Meridian (LI): Supports elimination and immune response.
  2. Stomach Meridian (ST): Influences digestion and nutrient assimilation.
  3. Small Intestine Meridian (SI): Manages digestion and absorption of nutrients.
  4. Bladder Meridian (BL): Maintains fluid balance and excretion.
  5. Triple Burner or San Jiao Meridian (SJ): Regulates metabolism and energy distribution.
  6. Gallbladder Meridian (GB): Helps with decision-making and detoxification.

In addition to restoring the balance of Qi, acupuncture also helps to relieve pain, inflammation, and other symptoms by:

  • Stimulating the release of endorphins to ease pain.
  • Promoting the flow of oxygenated blood to the affected area.
  • Balancing the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
  • Relieving stress.
  • Stimulating the body’s immune response to boost healing.
