Originating in China, acupuncture has been used to treat a variety of chronic pain conditions for thousands of years. Acupuncture involves the insertion of needles just below the skin along special points on the body called meridians. The needles promote the flow of oxygenated blood to the affected area, stimulate the body’s natural immune response, and restore balance to the body’s flow of Qi (life energy).
Acupuncture is particularly effective for treating a group of conditions referred to as repetitive motion disorders (RMDs). RMDs are caused by repeated movements that put stress on certain parts of the body, leading to pain and dysfunction. These disorders typically affect the muscles, tendons, nerves, and joints of the hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders, and neck.
COMMON TYPES OF REPETITIVE MOTION DISORDERS
There are many different types of RMDs. The most common include:
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is caused by compression of the median nerve as it travels through the wrist. Symptoms include numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand.
- Tendonitis is inflammation of a tendon, often occurring in the elbow, shoulder, or wrist.
- Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow/Golfer’s Elbow) is inflammation of the tendons attached to the elbow, caused by repetitive wrist and arm motions.
- Bursitis is inflammation of the bursa, a fluid-filled sac that reduces friction between tissues. Commonly affects the shoulder, elbow, and hip.
- Trigger Finger is a condition where a finger gets stuck in a bent position due to inflammation of the tendon sheath in the finger.
- De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis is inflammation of the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist.
RMDs can result from prolonged repetitive movements, overuse of specific muscles or tendons, poor posture, prolonged exposure to vibration, and working in unnatural or uncomfortable positions for extended periods.
RMD SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENTS
In addition to chronic pain and tenderness in the affected area, the symptoms of RMDs can include swelling and inflammation, numbness or tingling, especially in the hands or fingers, loss of strength and flexibility, and reduced range of motion. Ice and heat therapy, physical therapy, medications, ergonomic adjustments, acupuncture, and splints or braces are some of the ways RMDs are treated. In serious cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to relieve pressure on nerves or tendons.
