DO ACUPUNCTURE NEEDLES HURT?

If you’re like most people, you don’t like getting poked with a needle. Being injected with a needle can be painful and leave the injection site sore, bruised, and bleeding. How is acupuncture different?

Acupuncture is an ancient practice that involves inserting special needles at specific points along the body called meridians. Traditionally, acupuncture was used to restore balance and flow to the body’s QI, or life energy. Today, acupuncture is often used to relieve pain and other kinds of physical discomfort by promoting the flow of oxygenated blood to an affected area and stimulating the body’s natural immune response. providing relief from pain

Today, acupuncture is used to treat a variety of conditions, including:

  • Chronic pain, such as lower back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia
  • Stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and other mental health issues.
  • Digestive disorders, like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), acid reflux, constipation, and diarrhea.
  • Allergies, asthma, sinusitis, and other respiratory conditions.
  • Women’s health issues, including menstrual cramps, irregular periods, menopausal symptoms, etc.
  • Immune system support.
  • Migraines.
  • Addiction.

Acupuncture is typically used as part of a holistic treatment approach, often in conjunction with other therapies and lifestyle changes.

SPECIAL FEATURES OF ACUPUNCTURE NEEDLES

The needles used in acupuncture are extremely thin, much thinner than those used for injections or blood draws. They have several unique characteristics that distinguish them from other types of needles used in medical practices.

Acupuncture needles are much thinner than the hypodermic needles used for injections or blood draws. Typically, they have a diameter ranging from about 0.12 to 0.35 millimeters. Their thinness makes them less likely to cause pain upon insertion and allows for flexibility and manipulation.

Acupuncture needles come in various lengths and gauges (diameters) to accommodate different areas of the body and treatment needs. Shorter needles (about 15 mm) are used for more delicate areas like the face, while longer needles (up to 150 mm) are used for deeper insertion in regions like the back or thighs.

Unlike hypodermic needles, which are hollow to allow the passage of fluids, acupuncture needles are solid and filiform (thread-like). The tips are usually rounded and the surfaces are smooth. This design is intended to stimulate acupuncture points without cutting the skin or causing significant tissue damage.

Acupuncture needles are typically made from stainless steel, which is durable, resistant to corrosion, and biocompatible, minimizing the risk of infection or allergic reaction. Most needles are pre-sterilized and intended for single use only. After a session, they are disposed of to prevent cross-contamination and ensure patient safety.

WHAT DO PATIENTS SAY?

Most patients will agree that the needles used in acupuncture are far less painful than the ones used for injections or withdrawals. Many experience a sensation known as “De Qi” (pronounced “duh chee”) – a deep, dull, or tingling feeling that indicates the needle has reached the correct point and is effectively stimulating the body’s energy or Qi. Rather than feeling pain or discomfort, a majority of patients find the procedure to be soothing and relaxing.

The acupuncturist’s skill plays a crucial role in ensuring that the insertion of the needles is as painless as possible. After insertion, the needles are usually left in place for 15 to 30 minutes. Depending on the type of treatment, the needles may be manipulated (twisted) during the procedure.
